True Spec – best fitting experience I’ve ever had

Well, buckle up folks because I’m about to spill the tea on a golf fitting experience that was nothing short of amazing! I’m talking about the True Spec Golf fitting experience. Trust me when I say this, it’s like stepping into a pro level facility, with all the latest tech at your fingertips.

First off, let me paint a picture of True Spec’s fitting studio. It’s like golf’s version of NASA. State-of-the-art club fitting tools, launch monitors, and a colossal library of head and shaft options. It was as if I’d walked into golf heaven. I mean, where else can you find over 30,000 possible club combinations?

The True Spec team kicked things off with a detailed discussion about my current golf game, what I liked about my equipment, and what I was hoping to improve. My master fitter was none other than Shaun Fagan. Talk about top notch experience, he has even fitted Major champions! His attention to detail was mind-boggling! It wasn’t just about finding me new clubs, but enhancing my entire golfing experience.

Next up was hitting balls with my current clubs. They used a Quad launch monitor to assess my swing and collect data. It was pure tech wizardry! The launch monitor didn’t miss a beat, recording every minute detail of my swing. This wasn’t your ordinary driving range session, this was a deep dive into the nuts and bolts of my game!

Then came the fun part – testing the new club combinations. It was a mix and match fiesta, but under the guidance of my fitter, it was more than just trying different clubs. Each club was carefully chosen based on my swing data. The precision of the process had me awestruck. It felt like a bespoke suit fitting, only for my golf game!

After what felt like swinging a hundred clubs, we finally narrowed it down to a set that felt like they were made for me. It was a revelation, a golfing epiphany! I’ve played golf for years, but never had a set of clubs felt so right, so ‘me’.

Throughout the fitting, I was incredibly impressed by the team’s knowledge and professionalism. Their singular focus was to improve my game, and boy, did they deliver! I walked out feeling like a pro, armed with clubs that felt like a natural extension of me.

I left True Spec so excited for my new clubs. I couldn’t wait! But of course I had to. It takes a few weeks to get them delivered to my house. I had learned so much about my swing, about how the right equipment can drastically change the game. It’s not just hype, folks! The True Spec Golf fitting is a game-changer, a journey of self-discovery on the golf course, and a true testament to how personalized the sport can be. Trust me, once you’ve been True Spec’d, there’s no turning back!

Round 1 Rory

Wow, Rory McIlroy with the lead at the US Open after shooting 6 under.  It’s like he’s all they’re talking about on TV and rightly so.  He was playing out of his gourd yet again.  It’s another major and another incredible round for the young Irishman.  Of course, given what happened at the Master’s, there’s no telling what the weekend may bring.  However, if he keeps shooting rounds this low in Majors, he’s sure to end up with the trophy at the end of one of ‘em.

My favorite thing about Rory McIlroy is his swing.  If someone came up to me and said “hey, dude, you can have the swing of any player on the PGA tour”, I’d have to say Rory McIlroy’s.  It wouldn’t be Tiger Woods’ because it seems so difficult to do and he keeps changing it anyway.  So if he’s not satisfied, then maybe that’s not the swing I want.  I don’t want Phil’s swing either because he’s a lefty and his swing has just never appealed to me.  The Big Easy has a sweet swing that I’d take, especially because he makes it look so..well..easy!  Plus, back in the day Ernie was an awesome player!  Wait, he’s still an awesome player!  Another swing that I’ve always liked was Freddie Couples’.  He’s always had that effortless power thing going and he seems like a fantastic guy to go get a beer and hang out with.  Anyway, the point is, I’d love to have Rory’s swing!  It’s so smooth and his rhythm is so great!  It’s Nair smooth, triple blade smooth, even George Clooney smooth! And his balance is so, uh, balanced!

Well, you get the picture.  So just like everyone else, I’ll be waiting with bated breath to see what happens this weekend.  Oh, but another favorite thing about Rory McIlroy is that his name is so close to Roy McAvoy!  Now there was a player…

The Heritage at Hilton Head

This week’s Heritage was great!  Those spectators really got their money’s worth when Luke Donald and Brandt Snedeker went to a playoff.  And what a playoff!  I was pulling for Luke since he could take the #1 ranking, but he kept making things difficult for himself.  You had to feel for the guy though when his last chip lipped out.  Anyway, so what about Hilton Head?

I visited Hilton Head and it was a great time.  If you look past the 18th green on TV you can see the lighthouse behind it.  Surrounding the lighthouse is a small yacht harbor with some nice, sizeable boats.  I was very jealous and I think there was one actually named “Jealousy”.  We climbed the lighthouse where they have a webcam you can get on and wave to your friends.  Beneath the lighthouse is a small shopping area with some restaurants and a yacht club.  It’s a cute little town.  On Hilton Head Island, there are a few of those shopping areas.

Did you know that Harbor Town is on a private part of the island called Sea Pines?  You have to pay a little just to get in.  Hilton Head Island is shaped like a foot and Sea Pines encompasses the front part of the shoe.

I just spent one night there, but it was a pleasure.  Hilton Head is the type of place where people ride bikes and the breeze flows off the water like there’s a girl with a fan standing beside you.  Off season, it’s very reasonable and you can probably get on the golf course easier.  Even when it was in the 40s, people were playing.  In season, it’s still probably worth it, but you might have to plan ahead a little better.  I stayed at…you guessed it: the Hilton!  What a surprise, right?!  It was great and waterfront.  The restaurant is good, there’s a little bar/club, and it was waterfront.  What more could you ask for?

Practicing Swing Tempo

When I want to practice my swing tempo, my entire practice routine changes.  Most people start with their wedges or short irons and progress to their longer clubs.  However, when I practice swing tempo, I do the opposite.

I often start with a five iron or a four iron because they are more difficult to use.  Most aspects of the full swing are more important with the longer clubs, including swing tempo.  Naturally the swing is slower and longer with longer clubs and it’s easier for me to isolate swing tempo.  You may hear commentators on television talk about players getting “quick”.  This is when a player starts the down swing before he is ready.  With the longer clubs, a quick transition will be much more apparent.  In addition, with a longer, you’ll be able to feel the weight of the club easier throughout the swing.  With a shorter club, it’s much easier to make compensations and you may not know that your tempo is off.   Recently I heard that Tom Watson practices this way, too!

Alternatively, if you want to start with the shorter clubs, just make sure to focus on tempo first and consciously try not to swing too hard or fast.  This will be effective as well, but you just have to be more conscious of what you’re trying to do.

Charleston South Carolina Golf

Man it gets hot in Charleston.  It’s the humidity that does it.  Despite the heat, Charleston is a very pretty city.  The people are great.  The food is very tasty.  The downtown area was a fantastic place to walk around and watch people.  That’s where there’s a little market where you can get souvenirs.  The market is covered and stretches several blocks.  It looks like it used to be a farmers market.  And the bars in the area are really cool.  We went to a rooftop bar which had great atmosphere and cool drinks.  The good looking chicks didn’t hurt either 🙂  But the most important thing is the golf is great!

All anyone can talk about is Kiawah Island.  It’s obviously the main attraction and for good reason.  It’s ranked in the top five of courses throughout the United States on most lists.  It’s a little pricey, but if you want to play the best in Charleston, and one of the best in the country, this is the place to go.

We didn’t play Kiawah Island.  I’m not saying I won’t, but we didn’t play there this trip.  There are a lot of nice courses in the Charleston area.  We played another nearby course called Wild Dunes.  We played the Links Course, which was apparently rated pretty high by Golf Digest Magazine.  It was a community course, one of a few.  It was also water front and well maintained, but for a more reasonable price than Kiawah.  The last half of the back nine held the feature holes, and ran along the water.  As you might expect on the eastern coast, there were sand dunes and reinforcing fences.  Of course, there was also wind.  These were some beautiful holes and they even come with an audience looking down on the eighteenth hole from an adjacent hotel.  The 18th is their signature hole and is beautiful!  Don’t wear yourself out too much and save some for the crowds.  This picture is from their website .

The clubhouse was also very nice and well equipped.  It was built fairly recently and you can tell when you walk the grounds, but the golf course didn’t look too immature either.  The staff was also helpful and friendly.  Thankfully, there wasn’t much of a crowd when we were there, and it was during the busy summer.

They had very reasonable rates at Wild Dunes and be sure to ask for military rates if you qualify.  Overall, had a great experience!  Wear sunscreen!
